Amy Rose aka Rosy the Rascal
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog CD
Who is she? Considering this is a franchise starring a hedgehog, there do not seem to be many hedgehogs running around. There are more hedgehogs in this universe than foxes, of course, but we still have many more bird creatures than appearances of the title critter. And, oh yeah, this franchise has, like, four total women. Has there ever been a female-coded Eggman robot? Bah! Whatever! Point is that Amy Rose is “the girl”.
What are her powers? But she is not Sonic’s girlfriend! Or eternally unattainable princess! Amy Rose is obsessed with Sonic in a generally romantic way, and, as a result has gained ridiculous speed power in an effort to literally keep up with him. And she has a big hammer! So after getting damseled in today’s quest, she has been a useful member of the team in all future adventures. Sometimes she saves the day without even seeing Sonic.
Why is she still relevant today? As time has passed, Amy’s obsession with Sonic has cooled, and she has become something like a “one of the guys” character. She still has her own interests and personality that are distinct from the rest of the group (Tails does not understand tarot cards), but she is ready to repel badniks with the same force as Mighty Thor. And that’s cool! Women need representation in “boy franchises”, and it is great that Sonic Racing does not have to be limited to princesses and princesses-as-babies.
