Miles “Tails” Prower
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (technically the Master System release), 1992
Who is he? Sonic’s best buddy! Tails idolized Sonic, and, once mastering the spin dash, he was inducted into the Sonic Team to be the Luigi to Sonic’s Mario. Also, despite the handicap of being eight years old, Tails is definitely the most responsible of the duo. Sonic would probably starve to death without the little dude. We 100% know Tails pays Sonic’s phone bill.
What are his powers? He can fly! He has two tails that can be spun like helicopter blades (scientific basis for this skill: dubious), and he can flutter through the sky under his own power. Also, he is a genius mechanic, and seems to cavalierly build planes and submarines in his spare time. Beyond general vehicle maintenance, he was also able to break the spacetime continuum through intelligence and unbridled grief. In a world where Tails was allowed to hit puberty, he would probably conquer the whole of reality. Remember how he casually developed the iPhone in Sonic Unleashed?
Why is he still relevant today? It is easy to keep comparing Tails to Luigi (they are both a persistent player 2, and have “coward freakouts/doubt” at defining moments), but Tails really is his own animal (fox). The way he looks up to Sonic is immediately endearing to anyone who is not yet old enough to be the “cool older brother” that is Sonic, and the fact that Tails is 100% capable under his own power is impressive. There are many sidekick characters that radiate the kind of energy that demands their protagonist be present at all times, but Tails is often surprisingly self-sufficient. And that’s a neat trick for a kid that is barely out of kindergarten.

- Examining the split between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic CD is an excellent reason to discuss Yuji Naka’s greatest hits and/or crimes.
- All the little animals that Sonic rescues have names. We do not talk about Cucky.
- Morning Song is Sonic 4’s strongest soldier. We will see how that turns out in about twelve weeks.

A time when we played games online through Skype!- Somehow, we start investigating the webcomic Bottomless Waitress. Yes, those waitresses are certainly not wearing pants. And apparently there is a Bottomless Waitress Extended Universe?
- Ample Vigour joins just as I “shamefully” conquer Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
- We move on to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear) as we consider if Sonic has Buddha Nature.
- Our exalted fanboymaster has a personal grudge against this Game Gear title. This mostly just translates to explanations of why every boss is bullshit.
- Hang gliding is the worst.

- Caliscrub joins with talk of chili dogs and suddenly we are singing about weiners.
