Welcome to Even Worse Streams’ latest marathon: Sonic and His 2-D Friends. We will be playing through every 2-D Sonic the Hedgehog title that we remember exists, and every Monday you will also receive a profile of one of Sonic’s amazing buddies. Except this week! This week we are looking at the man (hedgehog) himself, Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic the Hedgehog
First Appearance: Rad Mobile, 1990
Who is he? According to a survey conducted in 2026, 30% of all babies born across the world already know the words and deeds of Sonic the Hedgehog. For the uninitiated/great grandmas, Sonic the Hedgehog is a little blue dude that is perpetually about 14 (ample attitude, but does not yet care about prom) and saves the world from a mad scientist. Occasionally, there are other threats, but he mostly just runs left to right in an effort to rescue helpless animals. Sometimes those animals are Tails.
What are his powers? Sonic can run fast. Additionally, he has to have some kind of… uh… friction forcefield? Maybe that is why he can naturally manipulate shields? Yes, that power must exist for the purpose of him not being pulped the minute he touches a single other object while traveling at the speed of sound. Also, Sonic experiences atmospheric reentry a strangely high number of times. This is the reason everyone on Mobius is not already inhaling hedgehog corpse dust.
Why is he still relevant today? Sonic the Hedgehog is patently not DC Comics’ The Flash: Sonic does not use his “running” in creative ways to overcome obstacles or vibrate through walls or whatever. Sonic the Hedgehog runs. And, give or take the ability to jump/go Super Saiyan, that is all he needs. Sonic has one skill, he is the absolute best in the world at it, and that is literally all he needs to save the world over and over again. That is a character that will be running around for generations.
Let’s Play 2-D Sonic the Hedgehog Games
Night 1
March 17, 2026
Random Notes:
- This is the first night of our coverage of every Sonic the Hedgehog 2-D platformer that we feel like playing. For our maiden Sonic voyage, we have BEAT, fanboymaster, Chromes, Caithness, and Morning Song. We are starting with a Sonic the Hedgehog (1) bonus stage, and confirming we will never play Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
- Let’s talk about the Sonic fandom! We are staying surprisingly on topic tonight!
- Even Worse Streams asks that you please send us your biggest naturals for Sonic the Hedgehog.
- We are going to make Chromes a star so he can forget all about us little people.
It is promised that fanboymaster will write about Final Fantasy 16. Now, weeks after this stream was live, has it happened? No. No it has not.- “I’m rolling dirty. Is that a thing?” “No.”
- We get into some significant Resident Evil discussion around the start of Labyrinth Zone. That may be a recurring theme during these Sonic streams for some reason.
- Swear your allegiance to your favorite Sonic animated series. If you choose Sonic Underground, we have questions.
- The History of Artificial Intelligence: Novel for chat in the beginning, gradually descended into insanity, and now bad for your electric bill.
- Goggle Bob Secret Origins: Sonic the Hedgehog Edition is revealed during the final battle against Eggman.
- Sonic the Hedgehog (game, not character) is defeated, so we decide to play… Sonic the Hedgehog (game, not character). Please experience Penny Arcade lore as we switch games.
- We’re playing Sonic the Hedgehog for Game Gear, so let’s talk about the sicko mode design of Sega’s Game Gear with Ample Vigour.
- Everyone in Dethklok is an infant being managed by a toddler. So it’s Rugrats?
- “Alf did not last nearly as long as it lingers in memory.”
- Learn the lore of Dogpatch USA!
- “Living that Eeyore lifestyle.”
- Do not investigate the ridiculous history of Teen Angel or its relation to YuYu Hakusho.
- As we wrap up with our Game Gear game of the evening, please enjoy a complete history of how Resident Evil’s Wesker kind of sucks as a villain.
Next lap on Sonic’s Marathon: The halfpipe of pain.

He has such great balance
