Sonic, you’re fired. We are replacing you with a cat that is fire.
Blaze the Cat
First Appearance: Sonic Rush, 2005
Who is she? Let’s set the record straight on this one. Yes, Blaze is a princess. Yes, it is her duty to protect the Sol Emeralds in a manner similar to Knuckles and his Chaos Emeralds. Yes, this somehow makes her more of a “shrine maiden” from an archetype/cultural perspective. Yes, Blaze is often set against Eggman Nega, who is a descendant of Eggman from the future. But Blaze is not from the future. Blaze is from an alternate dimension, and only visited the future, like, one time during Sonic ’06 because she had to pick up groceries or something.
What are her powers? Somebody was watching Avatar: The Last Airbender before designing Blaze, so she is a maximum-strength firebender. She is fast, strong, and can use fire in a myriad of creative ways, like for jet boots or a flame shield. Presumably unrelated to those abilities, as someone wearing pants, a coat, and gloves/sneakers that contain maximum frill, she is the most dressed animal in the Sonic the Hedgehog pantheon. Maybe she has to be insulated because of the fire thing? We don’t know.
Why is she still relevant today? Possibly because of her confused origins, Blaze the Cat has not been featured in a game with a plot focus for some time. However, she has appeared repeatedly in Sonic’s various spinoff titles, so it seems she is always ready to dimension hop to play tennis or race some karts. And that makes sense! Even more than Amy, Blaze is a woman in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that feels like she is more than a match for the title character. She is a great pick for a favorite Sonic the Hedgehog character… even if that means you have to check her wiki to explain why…
Let’s Play 2-D Sonic the Hedgehog Games
Night 12
May 19, 2026
Random Notes:
- We are Goggle Bob, BEAT, fanboymaster, Chromes, Caliscrub, Jeanie, and Morning Song, and we are here to play Sonic Rush and bring you exciting news about Grogu/Burger King marketing plans for 2040. And we’re all out of Grogu!
- “The point of a G.U.N. is the only law that Shadow the Hedgehog understood.”
- BEAT buys Whisker Squadron: Survivor for fanboymaster on stream. No one is certain if this is a gift or a threat.
- Ample Vigour joins just in time to discuss Peanuts voice acting.
- This was recorded in May, so obviously we must discuss being gay for Santa.
Choose your most philosophical Doom WAD.- “Open your third eye, fanboy!”
- Always remember to keep your children away from rude words in serious bops.
- Hey, remember that couple of days when Achewood was AI-upscaled? This stream will always remember.
- We provide vast speculation on the many horrible reasons Sonic the Hedgehog would get married. None of us believe it would lead to a good marriage.
- There needs to be a history of games based on tv shows based on games. Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game is allowed to sneak in there.
- “All horses were already evil.” “Now they are all baby girl.”
- Caithness is experiencing Sonic Underground. We are all very sorry, Caithness.
- Kingdom Hearts has a problem with homophobia from the fans, and misogyny from the franchise itself. At least everybody likes Sora… right?
- “There are so many good reasons to hate Clair Obscur, and we choose all of them.”
- I cheated my way to the Chaos Emeralds, and I’ll find a way to cheat the final boss, dammit!
- Having cleared all the Sonic content (and since Sonic was then killed by Amy Rose), we swap over to see how Blaze plays.
- “Tails is just a Tails.”
- And having beaten a stage with Blaze and recounted some “jokes” from Moral Orel and Bojack Horseman, we are done for the night.
Next lap on Sonic’s Marathon: I’m on a boat.
