Sometimes enjoying an old-school RPG is a matter of mitigating the bad.
The purpose of these little Lunar writeups is to highlight what is good about Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete without saying “it’s just good anime.” However, I am a hater, so I must acknowledge where Lunar: SSSC falls short. And this week? Damn do we have some short-fallin’.
In rapid succession, this week showcases:
- Blue Dragon Shrine’s Teleporter Maze
- Myght’s Tower’s “challenge” of only having two characters
- Lost Woods’ ridiculous progress qualifications
Basically, we have four different dungeons, and 75% of them have gimmicks that are absolute garbage. And the fourth dungeon? Tamur Pass is a generic “overworld” dungeon where the most memorable bit is that its finale introduces a pair of new characters. Otherwise, this is Nanza Pass in all but name. And we already fought through Nanza Pass, like, ninety times!
However, we are not here to roast Lunar, but praise it. What is good about these areas? Well, I spent last week talking about how “filler dungeons” help fill in the blanks on your eclectic party. Nanza Pass does not have much to offer there, as your team has little to say (and when was the last time Mia said anything?), but Myght’s Tower is an excellent opportunity for Alex to pal around with his hero (even if Alex doesn’t yet grasp Laike’s identity). Blue Dragon Shrine’s confusing layout is 100% a result of it being a teleporter maze, but since the monsters do not respawn, at least it is not as endless as some teleport mazes in contemporary RPGs. And the Lost Woods has terrible flags for actually making progress (you literally must wander around lost until the always-has-been obvious way forward opens), but… Uh… Sorry. I don’t think I have anything good to say about those damned woods. There is a funny bit of Kyle falling asleep standing up? Bah. I guess that’s something.
Look, not every play session of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete can be perfect! We will get to the dark side of the moon next week. Maybe skip ahead to that.
Let’s Play Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Night 5
June 24, 2025
Random Notes:
- Welcome back to Magic Point Conservation 101 with fanboymaster, BEAT, Chromes, Edward the Cat, Jeanie, Caithness, and Cassandralyn.
- Important truth: Sonic the Hedgehog must never remove his shoes, even if the entire concept of a game is that Sonic the Hedgehog has changed his shoes.
- Trynant joins… Oh, and we may have been mispronouncing their name this whole time. Sorry!
Morning Song joins as we learn the true meaning of Stripathon.- We found the Blue Dragon. She is having a bad day, but we do get a nice hat out of the deal.
- Everyone please resist imagining a world where cats can fly. It would be terrible for airports.
- Does Rancid have a single break up song? BEAT is trying to find one. In the meanwhile, we found cowboys.
- Caliscrub joins as we hit Tamur, and there may or may not be a baby sneaking into the stream, too.
- As we scale Myght’s Tower, we are unfortunately reminded that Myght’s flatulence was a Working Designs invention.
- While exploring the Lost Woods, Cassandralyn has an existential crisis due to Panic at the Disco being old enough for adults of today to consider them a “childhood phase”.
- Ecco the Dolphin: a game that hates the idea of a player.
- In an alternate universe, Even Better Streams always checks themselves and never wrecks themselves.
- And we close out the night with tales of BEAT’s bachelor party… which may have come up before. Do not check!
Next phase on Lunar: The final frontier.
